Who said the ski season was over? Snow remains up there, on northern British-Columbia icefields. The challenge is accessing these high summits. By foot, the only reasonable way up goes through massively crevassed glaciers full of deadly seracs, just like the Bear Glacier. As if managing white water was not difficult enough by itself, kayak surfers at Butze rapids need to time their prowess with incoming tides. They have deep knowledge about the water level changing by the minute that they exactly know which wave is best to ride at any given time. The result is a coordinated act jumping from channel to channel in between small islands while nailing impressive freestyle tricks. The range becomes empty of snowmobilers and snow on the ground mostly discourages hikers to visit. But, ski mountaineers thrive at this time of the year! The long days and stable snowpack allow for prolonged walks to ski further and bolder ski lines. For us, we also had to negotiate with very variable weather as heavy rain, snow, hail, strong winds, calmness and sun would rage all in a span of half an hour. Babine Mountains, Canada. Terrace climbing is no exception. In fact, I am astonished by how good the sport is there. On a variety of locations along the Skeena river, you find world-class climbing surrounded by the wild landscape of northwestern British-Columbia, offering a truly privileged experience. The climbing there is supported by one of the most driven, tight and inclusive community I have had the chance to be part of. All operate with climbing ethics as a core value and encourage the free sharing of intelligence and gear. They acknowledge and express deep respect for the privileged access they have on private and First Nation’s territory, as it should be. This community is still in its infancy, albeit a handful of pioneers, and history is currently being written for Terrace rock climbing. A strong developer’s mindset with a taste for exploration and expansion drives the opening of new routes every year. In fact, rare are the climbing areas where you can directly ask the first ascenders for beta! If you ever visit Terrace for the sport, you’ll realize that there it’s all about quality rock climbing and not a race for closed projects and first ascents. It is very refreshing. However, thanks to coastal weather, almost half of our crew came very close to a hike in, ski out upgraded adventure. That would have been, well uh… sub-optimal! Fortunately, everybody, including Sitka the dog, made it up with merely a few hours delay. It’s mid March in the Coastal Mountains, you should expect the snow to be wet and heavy. But we’re okay with that, we’ve got quite the party crew and the cabin is probably the most luxurious I’ve ever been to. That being said, we were welcomed by a fresh 40 cm of cold powder and witnessed a refresh of the same magnitude over our four-day trip! It was winter all over again, but with much MUCH longer days. Similarly to the mountains around, it changes every time you look at it. The water level, the drifting trees and the reflection of the sky are never exactly the same and the waves, current, sound and smell constitute the ever-evolving spirit of the river. It is impossible to feel like you’ve seen it all. This winter was no exception to the manifestation of the Skeena’s beauty. Several cold arctic outflows enabled the formation of a thick layer of ice so pristine that locals were skating on it. Due to the inherent strength of the river, this volume of ice was fractured and slowly washed down the Pacific ocean. For a brief moment in time, when atmospheric and river conditions aligned, the banks of the Skeena revealed an otherworldly ephemeral scenery made of ice, water and fog. We journeyed through this universe as humble guests, finding ways to relate to it and associating the immense with the infinitesimal. Skeena river, Terrace, Canada. Everybody knows it. You ski on Saturday, you camp in the parking lot at night, you party (hard) with the local community and you dress up on Sunday! How you should dress up is totally up to you! This year, my friends and I chose the theme of Intergalactic Skiers (and riders) and some went over the top! I love it. At the end of the day, Shames mountain organizes the infamous Slush cup, where contestants fearlessly attempt to glide across a pool of literally freezing water. Points are attributed to the best costume, best trick and best crash! This year was the first time this event happened in 3 years, it was long awaited. All in all, this day truly is a moment for the local users of the mountain to come together around a sport and a place that is very close to them.
